What a wellness membership should include.

'Membership' means different things depending on who is selling it — so compare the models differently before you compare the price.

Three different products, one word

There are monthly-credit models at spa and IV chains, all-access recovery lounges, and medical memberships like concierge or direct primary care. They are not variations on a theme; they are different purchases, and judging them by the same yardstick is how people end up paying for something they never use.

What any good membership spells out

  • Exactly what is included each month.
  • What happens to unused credits — rollover or lost.
  • Guest privileges.
  • The cancellation process.
  • The non-member price of everything, so you can do the math.
The math

Do it before you sign

Take the monthly fee and divide it by your realistic usage, then compare that to paying a la carte. The word doing the work in that sentence is realistic — be honest about how often you will actually go, not how often you intend to.

Red flags

Signals to take seriously

  • Auto-renew paired with a difficult cancellation process.
  • 'Member pricing' built on inflated base prices.
  • Vague 'discounts' instead of defined inclusions.
  • Long lock-in periods for services you haven't tried.
